In this case however we note softer corners than seen on the GX-1, owing to the larger sensor being viewed by the lens.
Chromatic Aberration Chromatic aberration is notable with the lens attached to both camera bodies: on both bodies, it's viewed in the corners, in areas of high contrast.
In images shot with the Panasonic GX-1, it appears as magenta-green fringing, and in images shot with the Sony NEX-7, it appears as magenta fringing.
It gets marginally better with either camera if you stop down, but only slightly. There is no extension of the lens during focus operations and attached filters will not rotate.
Macro This is not a lens with any significant macro capability: it only offers 0. The lens is made of primarily plastic components, weighing only grams 4.
The lens has only one control on it, the manual focus ring. There is no depth-of-field scale, distance scale or infrared index.
There are no stops, hard or otherwise, at the close-focusing and infinity end of the lens. The included lens hood is plastic, attaches via a bayonet mount, and can be reversed onto the lens for storage.
Other test results are also better: CA is better handled, there is slightly less corner shading, and distortion is a bit less severe naturally barrel-distorted rather than pincushion.
There is somewhat significant corner shading, but almost zero distortion. In this case, the Olympus makes for a slightly smaller. Conclusion There are a surprising number of alternatives in this category - wide primes for mirrorless cameras - so Sigma's offering comes at an interesting time.
It's not a case of Sigma finding a niche other manufacturers haven't exploited, however, Sigma does undercut all the current manufacturers with a lower price point.
The VFA target should give you a good idea of sharpness in the center and corners, as well as some idea of the extent of barrel or pincushion distortion and chromatic aberration, while the Still Life subject may help in judging contrast and color.
We shoot both images using the default JPEG settings and manual white balance of our test bodies, so the images should be quite consistent from lens to lens.
For the ''VFA'' target the viewfinder accuracy target from Imaging Resource , we also provide sample crops from the center and upper-left corner of each shot, so you can quickly get a sense of relative sharpness, without having to download and inspect the full-res images.
To avoid space limitations with the layout of our review pages, indexes to the test shots launch in separate windows. I bought this as a 28mm equivalent lens for my A Performance is pretty much in line with the review though in my own tests it does not reach the admittedly dizzy heights of its 60mm brother, with the edges staying a notch below the centre.
Manual focus feel is not the best; rubber would be preferable to the shiny metal surface and would also give the lens a bit of heft. But seriously, at this price there is nothing to really criticize: it even manages some decent bokeh!.
Please Sigma: more E and FE mount lenses please? Jun2 I think you misunderstood. I'm not talking about "other bargains" as I don't think the 19mm is a bargain at all, it's overpriced for so so not great IQ and very little to distinguish it from the kit lens.
The canon examples were not "other bargains" they are examples of some real bargains. The 24mm F2.
Interesting review. The reviewer keeps talking about decent sharpness, while posting gallery shots that are sharp as hell.
I own the original 30, and use it on a Nex 5n, Sharpest lens I own, and a perfect "normal" for me. Misses focus from time to time I thought missing focus due to the lens was supposed to be a thing of the past on mirrorless, since the AF is performed directly on the image sensor.
Seems like it would be the camera missing AF, more than the lens? It's not a huge thing, or dealbreaker --I use it a lot, and love the sharpness.
That would allow for some conclusions about those I read sth about 60mm being slightly awkward to use same remarks I found on 90mm … 'slightly too long' , but I think it is just a matter of being used to sth.
Sitting at a table the distance to people sitting across is good for portraits with a little bit of acrobatics … , while with 70mm or longer you'd need to take a step away.
Also, I find the crop shown above Brooklyn girl a good balance between respectful distance and intimacy. I considered two other praised optics, Olympus 45mm equiv.
It produces the most beautiful bokeh I found F2. Why would you test lenses designed for aps-c with a cropped camera Really difficult to see anything on the sides the center of most lenses are sharp.
Because you like the focal lengths? Because you actually prefer sharp corners? It's not the lenses that let down the photograph, but the photographer!
As an owner of the former 19mm and 30mm for m43 I can vouch for the quality of those lenses although the 19mm is the weakest of the bunch.
I have the older version of the 30mm - the same optically, but with a rubber grip on the focus ring rather than smooth metal. It's a really good lens for street photography, where I'm generally using narrower apertures and zone focusing or AF.
I've always found its manual focus quite poor though: the focus ring on two different lenses that I tried is a bit stiff and sticky, especially when you first start turning it.
It definitely makes fine adjustment to the focus tricky; I end up turning to too far, then having to turn it back to nail the focus point.
If they've made manual focus on the new one smoother then it may well be superior to the earlier version even with metal rather than a rubber grip.
I've got the current 60mm f2. The manual focus is very smooth. There's actually very little dampening, so for some people it might be too touchy.
It's a minor issue and I quite like the lens. They are great lenses offering a sharp image BUT I think it is important to know that the Bokeh is pretty hideous edit: in my opinion!
Not pretty imo : particularly on the 30mm. For this reason I picked up the sony 35mm 1. If sharpness is your number 1 than the sigmas are great but they have evidently prioritised this over other aspects of the image.
I found this out to my detriment :. I owned the 19mm and 30mm E mount pre-Art versions. They were sharper and much less expensive than the closest Sony primes.
But I couldn't deal with what the reviewer describes as the "alarming clunk" they make when the camera is turned off and they're facing down. Whether I was carrying the camera on its neck strap or had it in a jacket pocket, every other step I took was accompanied by a surprisingly loud knocking sound from the lens.
Ii never got used to it so I sold them. I have the 30mm and 60mm on Nex. For the money there is no other lens that can compete with it. The only thing that is lacking is image stabilizer but its cheap and good enough for my need.
I am using the 60mm on NEX 6. Nice little lens and optically excellent. I think what makes it a bit special, at least for APS-C, is that it is a compact, well done f2.
The Art designation is unusual when you think that the Art series is to be about 'no compromise design' rather than other considerations which typically means a faster lens.
Look and manual touch could be better but for the price there is nothing wrong with it also not very Art. It feels well made. Well, this lens is pretty slow.
Wide open means 2. What makes it outstanding is that at F2. Oter lenses may be a stop or two faster 60mm is not s slow lens by any means but very few can rival it at 2.
The Sigma 60 is considered one of the sharpest MFT lenses, by users and other reviews, really close to the 75mm.
And with a special rendering too. It probably deserves a better treatment. I only made one change to my 30mm to make it just right, for me.
Duct tape around the focus ring. A note for Damien Demolder and others who write for Dpreview. Please, when you use acronyms like PDAF, always spell them out as words on first reference, followed by the acronym in parentheses.
Dpreview is a site frequented by enthusiasts and pro's, but I doubt you want newbies to feel like laymen at a trial lawyers' convention "Mens rea; in pari delicto — say what?
I had to stop on "PDAF" and try to come up with the most likely meaning I could think of given the context: phase-detect automatic focus.
Good, clear writing, especially of a technical nature, doesn't challenge readers to intuit what's being said throughout a minefield of acronyms and jargon.
A faster lens would be nice, but then the cost will probably be alot dearer, but it will be interesting too see what other plans Sigma have for this system.
The Sigma 60mm is my portrait lens for my Sony Nex 6. It delivers wonderful results. I also have the 19mm and while I do not use that focal length often, it too is a very good lens.
I'll purchase the 30mm next. This 3 lens set-up is very familiar to me as my Contax G1 and 28mm, 45mm, and 90mm are very close in aperture and FL to the Sigma set yes I still shoot film.
Why no Nikon mount? I suppose they could be worked for Nikon 1 mount, though. They'd be 50mm, 80mm and mm equivalents.
Those would be pretty attractive options, actually. Throw the 10mm Nikon pancake in there and you have a nice f2.
Sigma USA has given the price and introduction date of the 60mm F2. This third lens for mirrorless cameras from Sigma joining the affordable 19mm F2.
